This page exists because "trust me" isn't good enough for a tool that tells you whether your PC is worth anything. Here's exactly what happens when you use it, where every number comes from, and where the honest limitations are.
SpecVsMachine is an independent tool for comparing your PC's hardware against Valve's 2026 Steam Machine. It isn't affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Valve Corporation — it's a small side project built to answer one specific question people kept asking after the Steam Machine launched: "would my PC actually beat this thing?"
The site is ad-supported, which is disclosed here plainly: keeping the tool free and not asking for accounts or payment means it runs on advertising rather than subscriptions.
There are three ways to get your PC's specs into the comparison, and each has a different accuracy ceiling:
Modern browsers deliberately restrict how much hardware detail a webpage can see — this is a privacy protection against device fingerprinting, not a limitation specific to this site. What's legitimately available: navigator.hardwareConcurrency (logical CPU thread count), navigator.deviceMemory (an approximate, capped RAM tier — Chrome/Edge only), and a WebGL renderer string that often, but not always, reveals your actual GPU model. A short in-browser benchmark also runs for reference, though it has no real equivalent to compare against on the Steam Machine side.
For more accurate detection, you can upload a plain-text system report — generated via Windows' dxdiag, macOS's system_profiler, or a short Linux terminal command (guides for all three are built into the tool). The file is parsed entirely in your browser using pattern matching against these known report formats — it's never uploaded to a server. This route typically recovers CPU model, thread count, RAM, GPU model, VRAM, and storage type/capacity far more reliably than the browser scan alone.
If you already know your specs, typing them in directly is the most accurate option by definition — you're not relying on any detection method at all, just telling the tool what you have.
Since there's no way to run your exact GPU through real game benchmarks from a browser, GPUs are sorted into five broad performance tiers relative to the Steam Machine's own GPU. The Steam Machine sits at Tier 3 by definition — the anchor point everything else is measured against.

Tier 3 isn't a guess — it's anchored directly to real testing. GamersNexus benchmarked the Steam Machine against actual desktop GPUs and found its real-world performance landed closest to the RX 6600, RTX 3060, and Intel Arc B570. Those three cards are the literal reference points for Tier 3; everything else is classified relative to them using known generational performance differences.
The Steam Machine's numbers in the game-by-game estimator are real, independently published benchmark results — not something calculated or guessed. Your PC's numbers are then estimated by scaling those real results using your GPU's tier: a Tier 4 GPU is modeled as roughly 1.6x the Steam Machine's measured FPS in that title, Tier 5 around 2.6x, and so on down to Tier 1.
This is explicitly a simplification, not a real benchmark of your hardware. It doesn't account for CPU bottlenecks, VRAM limits, driver differences, or the fact that scaling behavior varies significantly by game engine. It's meant to give a reasonable ballpark, not a lab-grade prediction — the tool says so directly next to every estimate it shows.
